My father lived and worked as a tenant farmer from 1928 to 1965. As a teenager he started pulling plows with mule teams and progressed to driving tractors when they became more available. He generally liked the landowners for whom he worked. Some were more generous than others with differences typically within the same family. At the end of his time in this kind of work in 1965 he earned $50 per month to support a family of nine plus his parents. The tenant families usually reserved a plot for their own gardens beside their houses. We grew vegetables ranging from corn to sugar beets. My older brothers were expected to help with the gardening work such as planting, weeding, and harvesting.
