Mallory Agerton (American, 20th century)

Artist's Statement

My paintings are intended to inspire the mind and renew the spirit. They follow the tradition of American Tonalism. All my life I have felt connected to art and the landscape. As a child, I loved long road trips - watching the hills and fields pass, the rows of crops clicking by like spokes on a wheel. I still can sense the excitement of seeing our car splash through a low water crossing or catching a glimpse of distant lavender hills. Such memories inspire my paintings as I strive to convey a sense of peace, tranquility and connection.

The elements in my landscapes are built from transparent under paintings, followed by layers of glazes and then touches of opaque paint. I compose most paintings from drawings done on location and from memory. They are not detailed renditions of a particular location. Instead, they are intended to embody timeless and eternal ideas and compositions. Most of my paintings are inspired by the Texas Hill Country with its quiet ponds and rivers in twilight hours and when the sun is low in the sky. While I spend a lot of time drawing outdoors and creating color studies, almost all the pieces are composed and completed in the studio.
